Alaska's 50th year anniversary celebrations begin Friday

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Alaska's 50th anniversary celebration is about to begin. Final preparations are under way for what may be the biggest celebration in Alaska since statehood.

Friday and Saturday is the official 50th anniversary party to commemorate Alaska's entrance into the union.

On Friday the Dena'ina Center will transform into a black-tie gala celebration.

"It's just going to be a lovely evening that really represents the state and all of its big majesty," said Tennys Owens with the statehood celebration. More

Gov. Sarah Palin will be the guest on a late night television talk show Wednesday night. No, she won't be on with Leno, Letterman, Conan or even Jimmy Kimmel, Carson Daly or Craig Ferguson. Instead, she will be the New Year's Eve guest of CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos, the edgy host of Canada's only late night talk show, The Hour.

The Hour is a mix of news, politics and pop culture, and - Canada being the socialist country that it is - it mostly has a liberal bent.

Alaska CHS band invited to perform in Inaugural Parade

 An invitation to perform in the presidential Inaugural Parade was music to the ears of members of the Colony High School marching band. The only high school marching band in the state, Colony hopes to mark time to the nation’s capitol, a singular honor that would make the band, school, Mat-Su Valley and state of Alaska proud.

There’s one catch — the band is still about $25,000 short of the $80,000 it takes to send an entire band more than 4,000 miles. More
